Holden calls it

My friend Cad has a twin brother whose favorite line from The Catcher in the Rye has always been, "Anyway, it was December and all, and it was cold as a witch's teat."

And if you live in New York City and you were in town this weekend, you know that that line is the perfect description of what we all just suffered through.

I am happy to report, however, that I personally got through it in the best possible way: Cad was here for a visit. She's one of my forever-friends who swooped into town for a much-needed girls' weekend. You know the kind--the ones that include long conversations about big things like relationships, careers, and religion, and little things like music, shopping, and Arrested Development. There's always wine. There's always someone who almost cries. There's always those "I wish we lived closer" moments. And best of all, there is always, always food.

These photos are from an afternoon at Noodle Bar on the Lower East Side. But we also whooped it up with burgers at Bar Tabac, scallops and pork chops at Little Giant, eel and a cheese plate at Public, and Sunday brunch at Apartment 138.

(And yes, if you add that up, I am pretty sure that we just consumed approximately 100,000 calories in about a three-day period. But my personal philosophy is that increased caloric intake due to circumstances such as vacationing, falling in love, celebrating a holiday, or just catching up with a girlfriend is completely acceptable and should be encouraged.)

Thank you warming up a witch's-teat-cold weekend, my friend. I'd eat my way through New York City with you any day.

Not in THIS house, young lady

If my grandma could work the Internet and see that I am using this post to tell the whole wide world-wide-web world that Glasgow artist David Shrigley's Salt and Pepper Shakers (available stateside at the Future Perfect pop-up store in Chelsea Market) make me laugh, she'd slap that silly right off my face, missy.

We need to talk.

Heeeeeeeeeeey.

So, yeah. I hate that I have to bring this up. I mean, it might hurt a little. But--you've been hanging out here for quite a while now. And at this point, you're sort of loafing about, quietly ignoring me, hoping I don't notice it. It's almost like you're starting to think life is all about, you know, just sitting there and looking pretty.

And I'll admit it--I've let you do it. I mean, hey, you do look good. Real good. Especially the way the light hits you right there--like that. Your skin's almost flawless. And your curves--shoot, they're nice and solid, just the way I like them.

But I've been around the block, and I can tell you one thing: looks aren't everything, and can only take you so far. Sure, you're all shapely and firm and whatnot now. But in time, you may sag. You may lose some of your flavor. And if this goes on too long, you may just become a shell of your former self.

You need to get out there and learn that it's not what's on the outside that counts. And for your own good--for our own good--I've decided that we should say goodbye. Because if I know anything, I know that you'll just rot inside if you stay. And so, butternut squash taking up counter space, it is with a heavy, hungry heart that I say: it's time for a change. And change will be very, very good.

Already ready for springtime

I don't care if they've ever been a design trend. I don't care if party and wedding invites and Thomas Paul used the hell out of them awhile back. I don't care that the real ones stick to my sweater and play hide-and-go-seek in my hair. I even don't care that, in the end, they are just weeds.

All I know is that I will never, ever stop loving the magical, make-a-wish, snowflake-in-springtime-floaty-ness of a dandelion.
